$80 million was awarded to Edwin Hardeman by a jury in California after the jury determined that Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller played a significant role in him developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The financial decision took place in the second part of the trial in San Francisco.

Monsanto’s parent company Bayer released a statement stating,

“We are disappointed with the jury’s decision, but this verdict does not change the weight of over four decades of extensive science and the conclusions of regulators worldwide that support the safety of our glyphosate-based herbicides and that they are not carcinogenic.”

Bayer plans to appeal this verdict.

The one positive is that this jury’s decision should be a step for holding Monsanto accountable for what it releases to the public since many of their products have harmed numerous consumers.

“Today, the jury resoundingly held Monsanto accountable for its 40 years of corporate malfeasance and sent a message to Monsanto that it needs to change the way it does business.”
